Restaurants are unlike anything else in digital marketing. Your customer doesn't plan a visit a week ahead — they decide in minutes, usually while hungry, and usually based on an image they've just seen. And crucially: distance is decisive. A brilliant ad seen by someone 30km away is a wasted ad.
Here are the platforms, ranked by their real impact in the Saudi market.
1. Google Maps — the channel everyone neglects
We start here because it returns the most for the least cost, and yet most restaurants ignore it entirely.
Consider the behaviour: hungry, in a particular area, someone opens Maps and types "restaurant near me" or "café". That's the highest purchase intent that exists — this person is ready to come now.
What you need to do:
- Upload 30–50 professional photos of the food and the room (profiles with plenty of images get markedly more engagement)
- Keep the menu, prices and opening hours current — especially during Ramadan and public holidays
- Reply to every review, positive and negative, within 24 hours
- Enable ordering and reservations if they're available to you
- Ask satisfied customers at the right moment: a QR prompt at the till, right after payment
Cost: zero in media. Just time and attention. Which is why it should come before you spend anything on any platform.
2. Snapchat — the strongest paid channel
Snapchat is the first choice for Saudi restaurants, for two reasons.
Precise geo-targeting. You can draw a radius around your branch with real accuracy. That alone separates it from everything else.
Density of local audience. Reach in Saudi Arabia is enormous across nearly every age bracket, so the audience near your branch is genuinely there.
How to run it properly:
- A 5–10km radius around the branch, not the whole city
- Daypart to peak hours only: before lunch and before dinner. A restaurant ad at 10am is wasted budget
- Show a specific dish with a specific offer, not "come visit us". "Burger, fries and a drink for SAR 39, today only" works far better
- Short vertical video of food being prepared or served, in natural light
3. TikTok — for awareness and reach
TikTok doesn't compete with Snapchat on driving a visit today, but it's the best at something else: making your restaurant known.
One video that spreads can introduce tens of thousands of people to your place, and that's a compounding effect budget alone can't buy. Food and atmosphere are native content for the platform.
Use it to launch a new dish, to show the experience of the room, or to collaborate with local creators. But don't expect the cost per visit that Snapchat gives you.
4. Google Ads — capturing clear intent
Someone searching "Italian restaurant Riyadh" or "best café in Olaya" knows what they want. Search ads capture that intent precisely.
Budget here is usually small, because search volume is geographically limited — but visit quality is very high. Always run location and call extensions.
A suggested budget split
For a single-branch restaurant with SAR 6,000 a month in media budget:
| Channel | Share | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Snapchat | 60% | SAR 3,600 |
| TikTok | 25% | SAR 1,500 |
| Google (Search + Maps) | 15% | SAR 900 |
Treat this as a starting split, adjusted after two months against real numbers. If Google turns out to deliver cheaper visits, move more to it.
Measuring the result: the hard part
The toughest question in restaurant marketing: how do you know an ad brought someone physically through the door?
There's no perfect answer, but three methods together give you enough:
- Direction requests and calls from your Google Maps profile — a clean, trackable monthly figure
- A campaign-specific discount code redeemed at the till
- Comparing live days against paused days — switch the campaign off for a week and compare sales
Three common mistakes
Targeting the whole city. The most expensive error there is. The budget reaches people who will never come.
An ad with no specific offer. "Come try our food" moves nobody. A specific offer with a deadline moves people.
Neglecting reviews. A 3.8-star rating undermines any campaign, because the customer sees the ad and then opens Maps to check. Fix the ratings before you raise the budget.
